Botox/Dysport Treatment
Botox In Sugar Land Texas
Neurotoxins are injectable muscle relaxants used to temporarily improve the look of forehead lines, smile lines (crow’s feet), and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults. The most well-known neurotoxins are Botox and Dysport, although there are several others.
In the right hands, neurotoxin injections provide a subtle and natural softening of lines and wrinkles, giving patients a more rested, youthful appearance. They also work to prevent the development of wrinkles. The injections themselves are quick with minimal discomfort and downtime and results last about 3-4 months.
How Botox/Dysport Work
Botulinum toxin blocks the nerve signals that tell muscles to squeeze, thereby keeping the muscles relaxed so they don’t create wrinkles. The effects of botulinum toxin are not permanent because the affected nerves will eventually sprout new endings. After about 3-4 months, a working connection between the nerve and muscle is re-established and injections can be repeated.
Other Uses Of Botox/Dysport
Besides the treatment of lines and wrinkles to help reverse the effect of aging, neurotoxins can be used for the following:
Treatment of hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, in the underarms
Treatment of overactive bladder which causes urinary incontinence, urgency, and frequency
Prevention of migraines
Treatment of blepharospasm (abnormal contraction of eyelid muscles)
Treatment of cervical dystonia i.e., painful spasms of neck muscles
Treatment of focal spasticity –localized groups of overactive muscles
Administering Botox/Dysport
The approach to administering neurotoxins should be individualized as each person’s facial musculature is unique. Before any treatment, the physician assesses for any pre-existing asymmetries or scars, evidence of skin infections, and previous cosmetic surgeries. Photographs are taken and the injection sites are marked with a pencil. To minimize discomfort, injections are administered via a thin insulin syringe and take only a few minutes. Immediately afterwards you may notice swollen areas that look like mosquito bites at the injection sites. Do not push on or manipulate these areas. They will flatten out within 20 minutes.
After your neurotoxin injections you will be instructed to:
Not lie down for 3-4 hours
Not exercise for 24 hours
Not fly on an airplane for 48 hours
It is ok to:
Take Tylenol or ibuprofen for pain
Apply ice packs gently to the area
Wear makeup once the swelling settles down and there is no pinpoint bleeding
The full effect of neurotoxin takes 2 weeks.
Contraindications To Neurotoxins
Botox/Dysport are contraindicated in persons with:
Pre-existing medical conditions that cause muscle weakness such as myasthenia gravis
Allergy to any component of the injections
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Risks Of Neurotoxin
The risks/adverse effects of neurotoxin injection include:
Headache that can last anywhere from 1 day to 2 weeks after injections
Flu-like symptoms for a few days
Eye dryness or excessive tearing
Droopy eyelid that could last up to 4 weeks (this can be treated with a prescription eyedrop)
Asymmetric eyebrows (which can be corrected with addition of neurotoxin into the overactive side)
