Affordable Hyperhidrosis Treatment for Hands

Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition characterized by excessive sweating affecting more than 2-5% of the population. It can be embarrassing and distressing and can disrupt people’s day to day lives. Fortunately, there are treatment options ranging from topical antiperspirants to prescription oral medications to neurotoxin injections. With the right treatment, you can reduce your symptoms and regain control over your situation.

In hyperhidrosis, you sweat excessively due to the overactivity of your body’s sweat glands. Sometimes, there is no apparent reason for this but at other times there is an underlying medical condition that triggers this excessive sweating.

Types of Hyperhidrosis

They are two types of hyperhidrosis

  • Primary (Focal) Hyperhidrosis

Primary focal hyperhidrosis is sweating that affects a specific body part such as the palms, soles, scalp, forehead, and armpits. Focal hyperhidrosis tends to start early in life and can be genetic.

  • Secondary (Generalized) Hyperhidrosis

Secondary hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating that happens all over due to an underlying medical condition, such as diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. Some medications like antidepressants and naproxen also cause excessive sweating as a side effect. Generalized hyperhidrosis is more common in adults.

Symptoms and Causes

In general, hyperhidrosis is caused by overworking of the body’s sweat glands without any apparent reason.

Common triggers of focal (primary) hyperhidrosis are certain odors and foods (such as peanuts, spices, and so on), emotional stress (especially anxiety), heat, and spinal cord injury.

For secondary (generalized) hyperhidrosis, common causes may include autonomic dysfunction (dysautonomia), infections such as tuberculosis, malignancies like Hodgkin’s disease, menopause, metabolic disorders like hyperthyroidism and diabetes, severe psychological stress, and certain drugs like insulin and some antidepressants.

In addition to the characteristic excessive sweating, other symptoms that usually stem from excessive sweating may include:

· Itching and inflammation

· Body odor because of bacteria mixing with sweat

· Skin changes and discoloration

· Maceration on the soles of the feet.

Your symptoms may give clues as to the type of hyperhidrosis you have. Excessive sweating chiefly localized on the hands and feet, for example, would mostly be due to focal hyperhidrosis while nights sweats may be a sign of generalized hyperhidrosis and would need investigation into the underlying cause. However, for proper treatment of the condition, it is recommended to see a board-certified dermatologist.

At Sweetwater Dermatology, our board-certified dermatologist in Sugar Land Texas, Dr. Likhari, specializes in the diagnosis and management of hyperhidrosis in all its varying forms.
